Over time--generally 80,000 to 100,000 miles--the gaskets would disintegrate, creating coolant leaks. The engine could then overheat and eventually warp the block. The distortion affected the cam bearings only. The GM engine coolant supplement pellets were essential to prevent minor leaks in the cooling system by retarding the erosion and are essential to maintaining the seal at the intake gasket. These were often not used on a regular basis by owners. In 1985, there was a change in the casting of the blocks for these engines--reinforcements were added. Eldorados with serial numbers after FE623772 had this new block and are sought after by knowing buyers.
