1982 Volkswagen Bus

1982 VW BUS T2 Kombi. This bus has been on more adventures than most Americans. Starting its life as a passenger van for years of business in Mexico. The previous owner purchased the car new in 1982 and kept it alive for nearly 40 years with just oil and the occasional adjustment these old buses require. Telling stories of its past history of going from a church van, getting painted yellow for his sons taxi business, spending time at the beach, and trips to Panama and back these car has more stamps in its passport then we get in a lifetime. Fast forward 6 months ago, I buy the van to drive around Mexico and put nearly 10,000 miles on it in the course of 3 months researching businesses. Before this journey I refreshed the suspension, put new brakes, rebuilt the transmission, replaced all the cables, had all the electronics rewired, new tires, new clutch. Leaving Mexico, I replaced all the ignition components, fuel pump, and a few other little things. I topped it all off with a Maaco quality Mexican paint job. As simple as these cars are that is pretty much everything. The only thing I didn’t replace is the engine! So pretty much worse case scenario happens, as I’m driving through the part of Texas where driving a VW pretty much makes you a communist, the engine just would not crank, uncharacteristic for this previously reliable simple car. After meeting a few new friends along the way we can’t figure out the problem, so I tow it back with a Uhaul, and get it to my friends shop up here who is a self claimed VW expert. He takes everything apart, bringing a few Mexican quality repairs up to standard along the way. He replaces the Starter, the Alternator, puts another new battery in, replaced all the fuses, and adjusts the valves. Finally he does a compression test and the engine is gone.
