The Chevrolet El Camino occupied a category all its own: a pickup bed grafted onto a passenger-car body, marketed as the vehicle that could "work all week and play all weekend." The original 1959–1960 models rode on Chevrolet's full-size platform and wore the same paint palette as the big Impalas and Bel Airs of those years — colors like Roman Red, Ermine White and Tasco Turquoise. After a hiatus, the El Camino returned for 1964 sharing the brand-new Chevelle A-body, and from that point its factory colors were identical to the Chevelle's, code for code, year after year.
Because of that shared A-body lineage, an El Camino's correct paint can always be cross-referenced against the Chevelle chart for the matching model year. GM rotated and renamed the palette annually — single-letter codes through 1968, then two-digit numeric codes from 1969 on — so a code like "R" or "75" only means a specific color within its own year. The most coveted finishes are the SS-era bright colors: Hugger Orange and Daytona Yellow arrived in 1969 as special-order shades available only with the SS or COPO package, and they remain the hot-rod hues collectors chase today.

🔧 Restoration Tips: Finding & Matching Your Original Color
-
•
Decode the cowl/firewall trim tag first: the paint code stamped there (a letter through 1968, two digits from 1969 on) is the single most reliable record of how your El Camino left the factory.
-
•
El Camino paint codes are identical to the Chevrolet Chevelle's for the same model year (1964 onward, shared A-body); if an El Camino-specific chart is unavailable, use the matching-year Chevelle chart with confidence.
-
•
Always match the code to the exact model year — GM reused and renamed two-digit codes between years, so the same code can mean different colors in 1970 versus 1971. Never assume a code carries over.
-
•
When verifying original color, inspect protected areas the respray rarely reaches — under the bed, inside door jambs, the firewall, and behind trim — to confirm the factory shade before committing to a repaint.
About these colors:
Color names, factory paint codes, and production years are cross-referenced from established
marque references and owner registries. Hex codes are approximate digital representations of
factory paint — vintage automotive paint was never defined as a hex value, and original enamel
fades over time. True paint colors depend on age, sun exposure, refinishing history, and
production batch variation. For an accurate match, always mix by the factory paint code — not
by the on-screen swatch — and verify against an original paint chip or a professional
color-matched sample before purchasing paint for a restoration.
