Classic car restoration FAQ
How do I choose a classic car restoration shop? +
Visit the shop, look at cars it is working on now, and ask to see finished cars of the same make or era as yours. Ask who will actually do the work, how the shop documents progress, and talk to two or three past customers. A shop that specializes in your marque usually knows where parts come from and what originality looks like.
How much does a classic car restoration cost? +
It depends on the car, its starting condition and the standard you want. A driver-quality refresh and a concours restoration of the same car can differ by many times. Ask for a written estimate broken down by stage (disassembly, metalwork, paint, mechanical, interior, assembly) and expect the final bill to move once the body is stripped and hidden rust shows up.
How long does a full restoration take? +
Often a year or more for a full, ground-up restoration, longer when parts are scarce or the shop has a waiting list. Ask when work on your car would actually start, not only how long it takes once it does.
Should I pay a restoration shop by the hour or a fixed price? +
Most shops bill time and materials, because nobody knows what is under the paint until the car is stripped. If you agree to hourly billing, ask for itemized invoices at regular intervals and a cap or check-in point before any stage goes over budget.
What is the difference between a restoration and a restomod? +
A restoration returns a car to how it left the factory, with original or correct reproduction parts. A restomod keeps the classic look but adds modern running gear, brakes, suspension or comfort features. Many shops do both; some specialize in one.
Is it worth restoring a classic car or buying one already restored? +
Buying a car that is already restored is usually cheaper than paying for a full restoration. Restoring makes the most sense for a car with family history, a rare car, or when you want it done exactly your way. If you are starting from scratch, a solid project car saves money compared with a rusty one.
