1948 Ford Pickup Restomod For Sale
350 V8 * 700R4 Overdrive * Mustang II IFS * Hydroboost Brakes * Highly Detailed Build
This 1948 Ford Pickup Restomod is a beautifully detailed custom truck that blends unmistakable postwar Ford styling with a Chevrolet small-block V8, overdrive automatic transmission, independent front suspension, modern braking, and a long list of handcrafted details. Owned by the current owner for approximately 10-11 years, the truck was already being transformed from its earlier life as a farm truck when he acquired it. He continued refining and upgrading the build over the years, creating the highly finished restomod seen today.

Extensive paperwork and a large collection of receipts accompany the truck. The exterior immediately stands out with its beautiful metallic silver and black two-tone finish. Gloss and satin/flat-black accents create a distinctive stripe effect, while hand-painted custom pinstriping adds another level of detail.

A set of polished vintage-style Center Line wheels completes the old-school hot-rod appearance, with a staggered tire combination of 205/60R15 up front and 225/75R15 in the rear. Under the hood is a 350ci Chevrolet small-block V8, represented as a 1977-era two-bolt- main engine. It features an Edelbrock aluminum intake, Edelbrock four-barrel carburetor, MSD ignition, finned valve covers, shorty headers, braided lines, and a distinctive high- flow Edelbrock air cleaner.

The engine has recently been tuned with new plugs and wires, while additional updates include a new battery and rebuilt alternator. An aluminum radiator with electric fan helps keep temperatures under control. Backing the 350 is a 700R4 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission, making this vintage pickup much better suited to relaxed highway cruising than its original drivetrain would have been.

Shorty headers feed a newer dual exhaust system. The exhaust was intentionally configured to provide a good V8 tone without becoming overly loud inside the cab, making this a truck that can actually be enjoyed on longer drives. The chassis received equally significant attention.

The frame has been boxed, and the front end uses a Fatman Mustang II-style independent front suspension. Power steering and Hydroboost-assisted brakes further improve drivability and control. Powertrain & Mechanical:

The custom pickup bed is one of the most distinctive aspects of the entire build.

Instead of the traditional wood bed floor found in so many restored pickups, this truck takes a different approach with extensive polished metal, chrome, stainless hardware, and diamond-plate detailing. The current owner, a former contractor, personally fabricated many of the bed details, including the custom rails. Integrated toolboxes are securely mounted in the bed, and the chrome spare wheel with a new tire is also properly secured but removable.

Custom tailgate hardware replaces the traditional chains, giving the rear of the truck a cleaner appearance. A third brake light has been neatly incorporated into the rear, along with a locking fuel cap and numerous small custom touches. Exterior & Bed Details:

The interior continues the restomod theme while remaining spacious and comfortable.

The seating has been refinished in a combination represented as Ultraleather with a contrasting vinyl insert, and the full-size cab provides plenty of headroom and legroom. A polished Grant GT-style leather-wrapped steering wheel is mounted to a tilt column, while Classic Instruments gauges provide clear information in a vintage-looking package. The truck is equipped with a Vintage Air climate-control system.

The air conditioning is not currently blowing cold and is reported to need a refrigerant recharge. Power windows and a custom stereo system add additional modern convenience, while extra cabin lighting provides better visibility and a nice touch for shows. Interior & Comfort:

This Ford isn't simply about appearance.

The combination of a 350 V8, 700R4 overdrive, Mustang II independent front suspension, power steering, Hydroboost brakes, and comfortable full-size cab makes it a restomod designed to be driven. It starts easily, runs smoothly, and has a restrained V8 exhaust note that allows normal conversation while cruising. The truck is also reported to drive tightly without unwanted squeaks or rattles.

What separates this 1948 Ford from many modified pickups is the amount of individual craftsmanship and attention to small details. From the handmade bed rails and custom tailgate hardware to the pinstriping, polished hardware, braided engine lines, custom lighting, and highly finished engine compartment, there's something different to notice almost everywhere you look. With approximately a decade of current ownership, extensive receipts, a detailed restoration and customization history, and numerous modern mechanical upgrades, this is a distinctive 1948 Ford restomod that's equally suited to local shows, weekend cruising, or simply enjoying out on the road.

The Ford F-1 was the half-ton model in Ford's first F-series — the truck that established the template every full-size American pickup has followed since. Clean examples are genuinely rare now, values have climbed steadily, and the customs and hot rod builder community has loved this body since the day it was new.

Ford F-1 Buyer's Guide (1948–1952)

When Ford rolled out the F-series in 1948, they called it "Built stronger to last longer" — and they weren't wrong. The F-1 was a different kind of truck than anything Ford had built before: purpose-designed for work, but styled like something you'd actually want to drive on a Sunday. I've worked on a lot of these over the years, and what still impresses me is how well the cab holds up when it hasn't been abused. Find one that spent its life in a dry climate and wasn't used as a dump truck, and you've got the foundation for something really special.

What to Check Before Buying

✓
Cab corner probe — Probe lower rear cab corners inside and outside — primary structural rust zone
✓
Running board mounts — Check mounting bracket attachment points at lower cab for rust
✓
Floor pan condition — Lift rubber mat and probe cab floor pans
✓
Bed floor crossmembers — Check every crossmember under bed floor — replacement cost depends on how many are good
✓
Firewall inspection — Check firewall for rust from fluid leaks and heat damage
✓
Engine cold start — Start from cold — working flathead V8 adds meaningful value
✓
Flathead head gasket check — Check for white exhaust smoke and oily coolant — inter-passage leak indicator
✓
Frame rail check — Inspect frame rails under cab at mounting points
✓
Door hinge alignment — Check door fit and hinge condition — worn hinges indicate hard use

Common Issues

Cab corner rust is the defining issue — the lower rear cab corners rust from packed debris at the cab-to-bed junction. Floor pan deterioration from condensation and spilled fluids over decades. Bed floor and crossmember deterioration on working trucks is nearly universal — expect to replace the bed floor. Flathead V8 head gasket failure between coolant and combustion passages is the classic flathead failure mode — check for white smoke and oily coolant. Running board mounting bracket rust. Door hinge wear on high-mileage examples. Wiring deterioration on 6-volt systems.

What to Look For

Cab corners — probe lower rear cab corners from inside and outside. Running board mounting brackets at lower cab. Floor pans inside cab under rubber mat. Bed floor crossmembers — check every crossmember for integrity before costing out a bed floor replacement. Firewall for fluid and heat damage. Verify engine runs before accepting any valuation — a running flathead is worth significantly more than a seized core. Check frame rails under cab for rust at mounting points. Door hinges and alignment — worn hinges indicate high mileage or hard use.

Price Guide

Driver quality with running flathead: $18,000–$28,000. Show stock restoration: $32,000–$48,000. Professional custom: $45,000–$80,000+. Award-winning build: $100,000+. Project with significant rust: $6,000–$14,000. Flathead V8 trucks command 15–20% over inline-six versions at equivalent condition. Cab corner repair runs $2,500–$5,000 at a qualified shop — factor into project pricing.

Did You Know?

The F-series nameplate introduced with the F-1 in 1948 is the longest-running continuous model name in American automotive history. Ford's F-150 (direct descendant) has been the best-selling vehicle in the US for over 40 consecutive years. The 1948–1952 F-1 was the first American truck designed from scratch with driver comfort as a primary design objective — previous trucks were built around the engine and cargo, with the driver accommodated as an afterthought.
