River Rat Classics

River Rat Classics is a small, family-owned classic car dealership in Lugoff, South Carolina, a town a short drive northeast of Columbia. The business describes itself as a boutique dealer of classic, collectible and performance cars and trucks. It is a modest operation, and little about its history is published, so this profile sticks to what the dealer and directory sources actually state.

Who they are

According to the dealer's About Us page, River Rat Classics was started by a school teacher and a firefighter who wanted to turn their enthusiasm for classic cars into a business. The site states its goal as giving Lugoff and the surrounding area "the best buying experience possible," with a focus on quality and affordability. A founding year is not given on the pages we reviewed, so we do not state one.

What they sell

The dealer lists classic, collectible and performance vehicles, and earlier research on the business points to a mix that includes Volkswagens and American cars and trucks from roughly the 1950s through the 1970s. The stock is small. At the time of research, ClassicCars.com showed only a handful of River Rat listings, and the dealer also appears on Classic.com and Facebook. Inventory turns over, so the current list on the dealer's site is the best guide.

How the business works

River Rat Classics operates as a dealer selling cars from its own stock. No consignment program is described on its site. Buyers outside the Columbia area can ask about delivery: directory descriptions say the dealer can help arrange shipping of a car anywhere in the world, though the specific terms, carriers and costs are not published. We could not confirm whether it offers financing or accepts trade-ins, so raise both questions early.

Buying from a small dealer

A small dealer can mean personal attention and quick answers, but it also means fewer cars to compare and no large service department behind the sale. Ask for the title status and VIN up front, request detailed photos or a walk-around video, and arrange an independent inspection if you are not buying in person. Our guide to how to buy a classic car lists the paperwork and mechanical checks worth making on any dealer purchase.

Reputation

We found no substantial review history for River Rat Classics. Review sites show only a couple of customer reviews, which is too few to draw conclusions, and we did not find a BBB rating. That is not a warning sign by itself for a young or low-volume dealer, but it does mean buyers should do their own checking: confirm the car, the title and the seller's details before sending a deposit.

Visiting River Rat Classics

The dealership's own About Us text gives the address as 26 Elm St, Lugoff, SC 29078. One older contact block and the ClassicCars.com directory show 10 Elm St, so confirm the location when you call. The main number is (803) 669-1598, and the dealer lists [email protected] for email. Opening hours are not published on the pages we reviewed, so call before you go.
