1979 Volkswagen Super Beetle Karmann Edition Convertible – Factory A/C, 4-Speed This 1979 VW Super Beetle Karmann Edition Convertible is a rare, German-built, 1-of-1,000 example equipped with factory working air conditioning and a 4-speed manual transmission. The car features a rust-free body with solid floor pans and has just 5 miles since restoration. Finished in AWL Craft urethane Pastel Pink over Mercedes White, it rides on new EMPI wheels with like-new tires, front disc brakes, and adjustable front struts.

A new OE fuel tank and electric fuel pump have been installed. Power comes from a professionally built 1756cc dual-port engine with a dual-relief case, brand-new Gene Berg counterweighted 8-dowel crank, new heads, pistons, and cylinders, 34PICT carb, and factory OE muffler. Retains factory heater boxes.

Volkswagen Super Beetle Buyer's Guide (1971–1979)

I get asked often whether the Super Beetle or the standard Beetle is the better buy, and the answer depends entirely on what you want to do with it. The Super Beetle rides better, has more luggage space, and — from 1973 — a panoramic curved windshield that makes it feel substantially more modern. The standard Beetle is the purer, lighter, more original experience. For someone who wants to actually use an air-cooled VW on a regular basis and live with it, the Super Beetle is the more practical choice. For a purist who wants the definitive Beetle experience as Porsche intended it in the 1930s, the standard car wins. Both are legitimate. Know which you're buying.

What to Check Before Buying

The curved 1303 windshield is expensive to replace ($400–$800+) and prone to edge delamination with age. MacPherson strut front suspension is more complex than the standard Beetle torsion bar system and requires specialist knowledge to service correctly. Pushrod tube O-ring hardening and oil seepage is universal on high-mileage engines. Valve clearance requires periodic adjustment — more frequently than many owners realize. Carburetor (Solex/PICT) requires periodic attention to float height and idle mixture. Cabriolet top seal deterioration causes water intrusion and body rust at rear corners.
