Gullwing Motor Cars
Astoria, Queens dealer of European and American classic and collector cars, founded by Peter Kumar, with project cars and a buy-your-car program.
About Gullwing Motor Cars
Gullwing Motor Cars is a classic and collector car dealer on 46th Street in Astoria, Queens, New York City. It is run by founder Peter Kumar, who told Old Cars Weekly in 2017 that he started his own dealership in 1988, and a 2018 profile in Astoria Characters and a 2024 Robb Report feature both place the business in Astoria since 1991. The company takes its name from the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, a car Kumar has said he admired from his early days in the trade.
A volume dealer, not a boutique
Gullwing buys and sells cars it owns outright. Its website does not mention consignment. Robb Report, visiting in August 2024, described a compound of several warehouses packed with roughly 265 cars, and the company's own site says it carries more than 100 cars at its warehouse location and calls itself one of the largest dealers of European and American classic and exotic cars on the East Coast. A ClassicCars.com page for the dealer showed 292 listings when this profile was prepared. Sales director Anthony Stella told Robb Report that the business is fast-paced and volume driven, and that it sells to individual collectors as well as wholesalers, auction houses and other dealers.
What Gullwing sells
The stock leans European, with Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Porsche, Austin-Healey, Ferrari and Maserati all prominent, but the company's list of specialties also runs through Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Lamborghini and Lotus, and through American names such as Corvette, Mustang, Cadillac, Packard and Pontiac GTO. Recent ClassicCars.com listings ranged from a 1966 Austin-Healey 3000 at $8,950 up to a 1954 OSCA MT4-2AD at $795,000, with a 1968 Jaguar XKE, a 1982 Porsche 911SC, a 1965 Porsche 356 SC and a 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SC in between. Stella described the price range to Robb Report as running from about $5,000 for an engine-out Austin-Healey to $1.8 million for a Gullwing.
The website has separate pages for barn finds and project cars and for a modern inventory of 1980 and newer vehicles, so shoppers will find everything from unrestored projects to ready-to-drive cars. Robb Report reported that the dealer does minimal work on cars and does not refurbish them, and Stella estimated that roughly 60 percent of the stock needs restoration and 40 percent is ready to go.
Buying from Gullwing
The company's website does not describe financing, shipping for buyers, trade-ins or a pre-purchase inspection program, so ask about each directly. Robb Report noted that at least one car in the building carried a window sticker reading "as is, no dealer warranty," which is a reminder to settle warranty terms before you commit to any car. Many of the cars are unrestored or lightly sorted, so an independent inspection by a specialist in that marque is worth arranging, and our guide on what to check before you buy covers paperwork, title status and questions to ask a dealer.
Selling a car to Gullwing
Buying is a large part of the business. The website invites owners to sell a classic in any location and any condition, and says it offers instant payment, arranges pickup from anywhere in the United States, and pays a finder's fee to people who refer cars. These are the company's own claims. As with any sale to a dealer, get the offer, payment method and pickup arrangements in writing before the car leaves.
Reputation
The company says it has 35 years of experience and that it was featured on the Velocity channel's show Chasing Classic Cars, where host Wayne Carini visited. Public review signals, as seen in October 2026, are mixed in the way they often are for a busy dealer:
- Birdeye shows 4.6 stars from 154 reviews, 135 of them from Google and 19 from CarGurus, with reviewers often mentioning quick replies and clear communication about condition.
- The Better Business Bureau lists Gullwing Motor Cars, Inc. as not accredited and not rated, with no closed complaints in the past three years and no customer reviews on its page.
Read recent reviews on each platform yourself and ask about the specific car you are considering.
