The 1968 Firebird is often described as a carryover year, a quiet pause between the car's 1967 launch and the more dramatic 1969 restyle. That description undersells it. Pontiac's engineers spent 1968 rebuilding parts of the Firebird that customers would never notice, because Washington had just told every American automaker what a new car had to include starting January 1 of that model year. The 1968 Firebird was the first version of the car built entirely under those rules, and that fact shaped it more than any styling decision Pontiac made on its own.

A model year built around new federal rules

The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act had passed in 1966, and by the 1968 model year its early Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards were mandatory across the industry, not just for Pontiac. Every Firebird built for the 1968 model year had to comply, and that meant real engineering changes rather than a badge update.
