The Oldsmobile 4-4-2: From Cutlass Option to Muscle Icon

The 4-4-2 was Oldsmobile's answer to the GTO, and at its peak it was one of the best-balanced muscle cars Detroit built, quick in a straight line and better through a corner than most rivals. The name stood for four-barrel carb, four-speed, and dual exhaust when it launched in 1964. It started as a Cutlass option, became its own model, then returned to a package.

"The 4-4-2 is born"
The 4-4-2 launched in 1964 as a Cutlass option to answer the GTO. Early cars used a 330 Rocket V8, with the 400 arriving for 1965. Genuine early 4-4-2 cars are handsome and rising.

"W-30 and Hurst/Olds"
The 4-4-2 became its own model in 1968. The Hurst/Olds arrived with a 455, and the W-30 cold-air package made it a street brawler. The 1970 cars dropped the 455 in across the board. This is the muscle peak.

Legacy & Impact

The 442 is the muscle car for the buyer who also wanted to corner. A documented W-30 or Hurst/Olds is the prize, but only with the paper to back it up, since the package is widely cloned. A package-era 442 is a cheaper way into the look.

Frequently Asked Questions

At its 1964 launch it meant four-barrel carburetor, four-speed manual, and dual exhaust. The badge always marked the performance version of the Cutlass.
The W-30 was the top performance package: a cold-air-induction 455 with special tuning, plastic inner fenders, and an outside-air hood. A documented W-30 is the most valuable 442.
