Frequently Asked Questions about Classic AM General

AM General was formed in 1971 by American Motors Corporation. American Motors had taken over Kaiser Jeep in 1970, including the division that built military trucks and government vehicles in South Bend, Indiana, and ran it at first as its General Products Division. In 1971 that division became a wholly owned subsidiary named AM General Corporation. The South Bend operation went back to Studebaker's military truck business, which Kaiser Jeep had bought in 1964.
AM General is owned by KPS Capital Partners, a private equity firm that bought the company in 2020. American Motors owned it from its formation in 1971 until 1983, when it was sold to LTV Corporation. The Renco Group acquired it in 1992, and in 2004 MacAndrews & Forbes, Ronald Perelman's holding company, took control through a joint venture with Renco. AM General is based in South Bend, Indiana.
AM General vehicles were built in northern Indiana, at South Bend and nearby Mishawaka. Military trucks, the M151A2 and the DJ-5 postal Jeep came from the former Studebaker plant complex in South Bend, whose main plant stood on Chippewa Avenue. Transit buses were assembled in Mishawaka, and so were the Humvee, the civilian Hummer H1 and the Hummer H2 that AM General built for General Motors.
AM General began building the Humvee in 1984, after winning the U.S. Army's production contract on March 22, 1983. That first five-year contract covered 55,000 vehicles and was reported at about $1.2 billion. The first trucks reached the Army in 1985. Humvee is the nickname for the HMMWV, the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, which AM General assembled in Mishawaka, Indiana.
Yes. The Hummer H1 was the civilian version of AM General's military Humvee, built by AM General in Mishawaka, Indiana, and first sold to the public as the Hummer in 1992. In December 1999 General Motors bought the Hummer brand name. AM General kept building the truck, which became the H1, and from 2002 also assembled the H2 for GM. The last H1s were built in June 2006.
Yes. AM General built the DJ-5 Dispatcher, a two-wheel-drive Jeep used by the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier's vehicle, in South Bend, Indiana, through 1984. Postal versions had enclosed bodies with sliding doors and automatic transmissions, often with right-hand drive. Engines changed several times, ending with an AMC 2.5-liter four-cylinder in the 1983-1984 DJ-5M. More than 350 battery-electric DJ-5E Electrucks were also sold to the Postal Service.
Yes. AM General built city transit buses from 1974 to 1979, sold as the AM General Metropolitan and assembled in Mishawaka, Indiana. The design was licensed from Flyer of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and modified by AM General. Total production was 5,431 buses, a figure that includes electric trolley buses. AM General left the bus business after 1979.
The original M998 Humvee used a General Motors 6.2-liter V8 diesel rated at 150 horsepower, with a three-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. Later A2-series Humvees used a 6.5-liter V8 diesel. The Army adopted the Humvee to replace the M151 jeep and other light tactical vehicles.
