Classic Cars West
Oakland, California dealer and consignor of European sports cars, American muscle and prewar cars, with a second showroom in Grass Valley.
About Classic Cars West
Classic Cars West is a classic and collectible car dealer on the Embarcadero in Oakland, California, with a second showroom in Grass Valley in the Sierra Nevada. The company says it was established in 2005 and began by restoring American muscle cars in San Francisco's Mission District. After seven years there it moved across the bay to Oakland, and in 2022 it opened the Grass Valley location. It buys, sells and consigns cars, and its inventory runs well beyond the muscle cars it started with.
Who Classic Cars West is
On its own site, Classic Cars West calls itself a boutique classic car dealership and says it has experience in "all facets of the automotive business." Its Oakland showroom first operated as a combined bar, restaurant and car dealer; the company says the restaurant closed after the pandemic and that it is now focused on selling classic and collectible vehicles. The company also says it has been covered by outlets including the New York Times, SF Gate, NBC Bay Area and Alaska Airlines Magazine, though we did not check the individual articles.
The start date is worth a note. The about page says 2005, while a Better Business Bureau record lists a start date of January 2004, and the consignment page says the company has been a licensed, bonded and insured dealer since 2004. Either way, it has been operating for roughly two decades. The owners are not named on the pages we reviewed.
What it sells
The company describes its stock as ranging from European sports cars to American muscle and prewar vehicles, plus modern exotic and luxury cars. A look at its site in early October 2026 fits that description: a 1992 Porsche 968, a 1987 Mercedes-Benz 560SL, a 1971 Dodge Challenger R/T, a 1969 Camaro RS/SS, a 1972 Chevrolet C10 pickup, a 1971 Triumph TR6 and, at the Grass Valley showroom, a 1939 Ford Standard and a 1937 Nash 400 Lafayette. Recent sold listings included a 1954 Jaguar XK120 and a 1965 Porsche 356 C.
Among the priced cars on its home page, asking prices ran from $13,500 to $54,500, and a few cars were listed as price on inquiry. Some cars are sold through online auctions: several listings say a car is coming to Bring a Trailer, so check whether a car you like is still available for direct sale. Buying from Classic Cars West
The company invites buyers to inspect cars at the Oakland showroom seven days a week by appointment, and the Grass Valley showroom is also by appointment. It also posts walk-around and test-drive videos on its YouTube channel, which helps with long-distance shopping. The company says it has shipped cars across the United States and to Europe, Southeast Asia, South America and Canada, and offers classic car appraisals.
The pages we read do not describe financing, trade-in terms or a pre-purchase inspection program, so ask about those directly. As with any dealer purchase, confirm the title status, ask for service records and consider an independent inspection before sending money.
Selling or consigning your car
Classic Cars West will either buy a car outright or take it on consignment, and it says consignment is its most popular option. The terms below are the company's own published schedule, so confirm them in writing before signing anything. If you are comparing options, our guide to how classic car consignment works explains the typical arrangements.
- Term: a 120-day agreement. The company says that if the car does not sell in that time you owe nothing, with no storage or marketing fees.
- Commission: a flat $3,000 for cars under $30,000, then 10% for $30,001 to $50,000, 9% for $50,001 to $75,000, 8% for $75,001 to $85,000 and 7% above that. Rates vary for rare cars over $150,000.
- Pricing: the company says it never works on a "net number to you" basis, so the owner sees the final documented sale price and the commission is calculated from it.
- Service: it says it prices the car with the owner, photographs it, displays it in the showroom, handles inquiries, showings, negotiation and title paperwork, and lets the owner approve every offer. It also offers a free evaluation.
Reputation
The Better Business Bureau lists Classic Cars West as not accredited and not rated, with no complaints closed in the last three years and no customer reviews on the BBB page. That is a lack of information rather than a negative finding. Review aggregator Birdeye shows a 4.5 star average from 91 reviews, all of them from Google, at the time of our research.
