When owners ask me how the Autotrader Classics sell process works, they usually start from an assumption that is half right. They assume it is the regular Autotrader site with an old-car filter switched on. It is not. Autotrader runs its classics marketplace as a separate site, Classics on Autotrader, with its own listings and its own seller packages. That distinction matters, because the audience, the pricing and the way the listing behaves all follow from it.
This piece puts Autotrader Classics next to Classic Cars Arena, line by line. Classic Cars Arena wrote it, so I have tried to hold myself to the standard I would expect of anyone else: say what the record supports, say plainly where the other side is stronger, and do not quote a number I cannot confirm. Autotrader's own sell page blocks automated checks, so the package figures below come from an archived copy of that page dated September 19, 2026. Treat them as a snapshot and confirm them on the day you list. For how both sites sit among the other listing options, see the bigger picture.
What Autotrader Classics actually is
Classics on Autotrader sells paid listing packages to private sellers, and each one runs for a fixed term. In that September 2026 snapshot, the Deluxe Classic Listing was $99.95 for a 5-month ad with 2 weeks of featured placement and 35 photos plus video. The Premium Classic Listing was $149.95 for a 1-year ad, featured for the whole year, with 100 photos plus video. There was also a 7-day online auction for $29.95, with up to 100 photos and a video. The site says it only lists classic vehicles located in the US, so a seller in Canada cannot use it.
What it carries that no small site can is the name. Autotrader is one of the most familiar car-shopping brands in the country. A buyer who would never think to visit a collector marketplace may still recognize it and trust it, and that reach into everyday shoppers is the real reason to consider it.
The two sites side by side
Where I could not confirm a current Autotrader figure, the table describes how the item works instead of quoting a number.

| Commission on the sale | None listed on its sell page; the package price is the fee | None, no success fee, no buyer premium |
| Listing duration | Deluxe 5 months, Premium 1 year, auction 7 days | Until sold |
| Photos | Deluxe 35, Premium 100, auction 100 | Starter 25, Featured 50, Premium unlimited |
| Video | All three options | Featured and Premium |
| Email exposure | Not listed among package features; featured placement in search instead (2 weeks on Deluxe, 1 year on Premium) | Featured: one newsletter blast to 15,000+ subscribers with your car as the lead story. Premium: three blasts (one VIP email with your car alone, two as the lead story) and 30 days pinned on the homepage |
| Audience | Classic shoppers plus everyday buyers who know the Autotrader name | Classic-only shoppers |
| Brand recognition | One of the best-known car-shopping names in the US | Newer and far less known |

Where Autotrader Classics is stronger
Brand reach is the clearest advantage, and it is not close. More people know the Autotrader name than will ever know ours, and Autotrader says its sites reach over 3.9 million automotive enthusiasts a month. For the right car, that is worth paying for.
Price is closer than you might expect, too. Deluxe at $99.95 is within a dollar of our $99 Featured tier, and Premium at $149.95 for a full year is cheaper than our $179 Premium. Autotrader also offers something we do not: a 7-day online auction for $29.95, for a seller who wants a deadline.
The right car is usually a later one. A 1987 Buick Grand National, a 1989 Mustang GT 5.0, a third-generation Camaro or a 1990s Japanese sports car appeals to buyers who are also looking at modern used cars. Many of them do not think of themselves as collectors yet. They grew up with these cars, they have a budget, and they shop where they have always shopped for cars. Autotrader puts your listing in front of that buyer in a way a classic-only site cannot. The same logic applies to other big-name generalist marketplaces, which trade a specialist audience for sheer scale; if you are weighing that trade, there is more on selling a classic car on eBay in our head-to-head with eBay Motors.
The broader audience also brings buyers who are comfortable with a standard car transaction: financing, a pre-purchase inspection at a local shop, a trade-in somewhere along the way. For a seller who wants a buyer who behaves like a normal car shopper, that familiarity is useful.
Where Classic Cars Arena is stronger
The entry price is lower. Starter is $49, against $99.95 for Autotrader's Deluxe, and every tier is paid once. No commission, no success fee, no buyer premium, and the buyer pays you directly. You can put the fee in your notes on day one and it will be the same number on the day the car sells, however long that takes.
That is the second point: the listing stays up until the car is sold. A fixed-term package works well when the car moves inside that term, and a year on Autotrader's Premium is a long term. A car with a narrow buyer pool, an older model, an unusual body style, a car whose best buyer is one of a few hundred people in the country, may still outlast it, and then you are deciding whether to buy another term. A listing that simply stays up removes that decision. Classic Cars Arena also takes sellers in Canada, which Autotrader's classics site does not.
The audience is narrower, and that cuts both ways. Everyone browsing Classic Cars Arena came for old cars. A 1950s sedan or a pre-war car will not get lost among late-model inventory, and the questions you receive tend to be about the car rather than about monthly payments. Featured and Premium listings also go to more than 15,000 newsletter subscribers who signed up to receive new listings. On Featured, your car is the lead story of one blast. On Premium it gets three: two where it leads and one VIP email where it is the only car. That list is small next to the Autotrader name. It is also a list of people who asked for exactly this kind of email.
"Before you pay for any package, write down what it includes, how long it runs, and what happens when the term ends. Keep a copy of the terms page with the date on it. Sellers rarely remember what they bought, and they always remember being charged a second time."
— Tom Ramirez
Who should pick which
Pick Autotrader Classics if the car is a 1980s or 1990s model that everyday shoppers already recognize, if your likely buyer is someone who has always shopped for cars on Autotrader, or if brand trust is what you think will get a hesitant buyer to call. It also makes sense when you expect the car to sell inside one package term, so the fixed duration costs you nothing extra, or when you want a short auction with a firm end date.
Pick Classic Cars Arena if you want a flat fee with a listing that stays up until sold, if the car is older or more specialized and needs a classic-only audience, if you want your car leading a newsletter blast, or alone in a VIP email on Premium, or if you are selling in Canada. It suits the seller with a slow-moving car and the patience to wait for the right buyer.
Whichever you choose, the listing is a record of the car, and it should read like one. State the VIN, the documented history, what has been replaced and when, and photograph the paperwork alongside the car. A buyer who can check your claims is a buyer who calls. If a classic-only audience fits your car, compare the flat-fee plans and pick the tier that matches how much exposure the car needs.
