Frequently Asked Questions about Classic Morris
Morris was founded by William Richard Morris, who had started out repairing and building bicycles in Oxford, England. He formed W.R.M. Motors Ltd in 1912, and his first car, the two-seat Morris Oxford, went on sale in 1913. It became known as the Bullnose because of its rounded radiator. A new company, Morris Motors Ltd, replaced W.R.M. Motors in 1919, and its founder later became Lord Nuffield.
The home of Morris production was Cowley, on the outskirts of Oxford, England, where William Morris began building cars in a disused military training college. The first Bullnose Morris Oxford left the factory in 1913. Cowley went on to build the Morris Minor and, from 1959, the Morris Mini-Minor. Part of the site is now BMW Group's Plant Oxford, home of the modern MINI since 2001.
Morris was led by its founder William Morris, later Lord Nuffield, whose group became known as the Nuffield Organisation and also included Wolseley, Riley and MG. In 1952 Morris merged with the Austin Motor Company to form the British Motor Corporation (BMC). A further merger with Leyland in 1968 created British Leyland, which kept the Morris name on its cars into the 1980s.
The last Morris passenger car was the Ital, launched in 1980, and its production ended in 1984. After that the Morris badge survived briefly on a van version of the Metro. The Morris Register dates the final use of the Morris name to 1985, the year the van was rebadged as the Austin Metro 310.
The Morris Minor was a small family car designed under Alec Issigonis and launched at the 1948 London Motor Show at Earls Court. It had unit construction and independent front suspension, and it reused a name Morris had first given to a small car in 1928. The Minor became the first British car to sell one million units. The last sedan was built in November 1970 and the last Traveller wagon in April 1971.
Yes. From 1949, Morris Minors bound for North America had their headlamps moved out of the grille and mounted higher on the front fenders to meet local requirements, and that layout was soon adopted on every Minor. Hagerty notes that BMC sold relatively few Minors in the US, and suggests the car looked like prewar transportation to American buyers.
The Morris Eight was a small family car introduced in 1934 with a 918 cc side-valve four-cylinder engine, offered as a sedan or an open tourer. An updated Series E followed in 1938 and stayed in production until 1948, with 120,434 built, although no tourers were made in Britain after World War II. The same 918 cc engine powered the first Morris Minor of 1948.
MG takes its name from Morris Garages, William Morris's own retail sales and service business in Oxford. In the 1920s its manager, Cecil Kimber, began offering sportier versions of Morris cars with special bodies under the MG name. Morris owned MG personally until 1935, when he sold it to Morris Motors, placing both marques in the same company.
The 11 Morris listings on Classic Cars Arena right now are priced from $6,800 to $41,995, with a median asking price of $20,495. These are the prices sellers are asking today, not sale prices, and the figures change as cars are listed and sold.
