1928 Ford Model A for Sale

26 listings

The 1928 Ford Model A is the first year of the car that replaced the Model T. Ford built the first one on October 20, 1927 and showed it to the public on December 2, titled as a 1928 model, with a 40 hp, 201 cubic inch four-cylinder engine, a conventional three-speed gearbox and mechanical brakes on all four wheels. Ford changed many parts during the year, so an early 1928 car and a late one differ in ways collectors care about.

Frequently Asked Questions about the 1928 Ford Model A

Body style and condition decide most of it. Tudor and Fordor sedans are the usual way in, coupes sit in the middle, and roadsters, phaetons and roadster pickups ask more. Documented early AR cars and well-built hot rods are judged separately. Where this page shows a price range and median, they are calculated from the cars listed today.
AR is a collector name for the earliest 1928 Model As, taken from the AR suffix on part numbers used only on those cars. Ford never sold a model called AR. Typical signs are a squeeze-grip hand brake on the driver's left, a multiple disc clutch and smooth pedals, but there is no single cutoff date.
Published figures for 1928 alone differ, depending on whether they count by calendar or model year and whether they include plants outside the US. Production built up slowly after the car went on sale in December 1927, and the millionth Model A was completed on February 4, 1929.
It is hand-stamped on the left side of the engine block, above the water inlet, between two star symbols. Ford used the engine number as the car's serial number, so it should match the title unless the engine has been replaced.
From the outside, very little: both use the same body shapes and 21 inch wheels. The differences are running changes. Early 1928 parts such as the left-hand hand brake and the multiple disc clutch were gone by 1929. The engine number dates a car more reliably than any single part.
