Frequently Asked Questions about the Chevrolet S10

The Chevrolet S-10 came out in late 1981 as a 1982 model. It was the first domestically built compact pickup from Detroit's Big Three automakers, and it launched together with a GMC twin called the S-15. First-year trucks were rear-wheel drive only, with four-wheel drive following for the 1983 model year.
Chevrolet ended the S-10 in North America after the 2004 model year, when the Chevrolet Colorado replaced it. In that final year only the four-door Crew Cab was still offered. The name carried on in Brazil, where local production of the S10 had begun in 1995.
The S-10 replaced the Chevrolet LUV, a rebadged Isuzu pickup that Chevrolet had imported from Japan since 1972. LUV stood for Light Utility Vehicle. Imported trucks were subject to the chicken tax, and GM chose to build its own compact pickup in the United States instead. The early S-10 still used a 1.9-liter Isuzu four-cylinder as its base engine.
The 1982 Chevrolet S-10 offered a 1.9-liter Isuzu four-cylinder rated at 82 horsepower or an optional 2.8-liter V6 with 110 horsepower. A 2.5-liter fuel-injected four-cylinder arrived for 1985, and a 4.3-liter V6 rated at 160 horsepower was added for 1988. The redesigned 1994 truck had a 2.2-liter four-cylinder as its base engine and kept the 4.3-liter V6.
Chevrolet sold two generations of the S-10 in North America. The first covered the 1982 through 1993 model years. The second arrived for 1994 with a rounded, more aerodynamic body on the same GMT325 platform and lasted through 2004. A third-generation S10 launched in Brazil in 2012, but it is a different truck based on the Chevrolet Colorado.
The GMC version of the Chevy S-10 was the S-15, launched alongside the Chevrolet for 1982 and renamed Sonoma in 1991. The same platform also produced the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer and GMC S-15 Jimmy sport utilities, which debuted for 1983. Isuzu sold its own rebadged version of the second-generation truck, the Hombre, beginning with the 1996 model year.
Yes, Chevrolet built the S-10 Electric for the 1997 and 1998 model years, aimed mainly at fleet customers. It used a version of the GM EV1 drive system with an 85-kilowatt (114 horsepower) motor, which made it front-wheel drive, unlike gasoline S-10s. The 1997 trucks had a lead-acid battery pack, and a nickel-metal hydride pack became available for 1998.
Four-wheel drive and an extended cab both joined the Chevy S-10 line for the 1983 model year, after a first year sold only as a rear-drive regular cab. Extended-cab trucks gained an optional third door for 1996. A four-door Crew Cab arrived for the 2001 model year and came only with four-wheel drive.
The 29 Chevrolet S10 listings on Classic Cars Arena right now are priced from $5,800 to $45,995, with a median asking price of $15,495. These are the prices sellers are asking today, not sale prices, and the figures change as cars are listed and sold.
